Investigation of Mass Change Characteristics and Acid Mine Drainage Potential of Avliyana Mineralization/Alteration Field

Abstract

The aim of the study is to examine the geochemical changes due to the hydrothermal alteration developed in the Avliyana (Torul, Gümüşhane/Türkiye) mineralization/alteration site, the mass changes due to these, the determination of the precursor/altered rock element losses and gains, and the investigation of the acid mine drainage potential/risk due to the alteration of sulfide minerals. In this context, sequential samples were taken along a line from the ore zone to the fresh rock, considering the mineralization zone as the axis, in order to determine the mass changes and element gains and losses. In addition, in order to investigate the potential risk of acid mine drainage in the field, water, soil and river sand samples were taken from acid mine drainage seepages and their effective points and related analyzes were carried out. As a result of the study, the genetic relationship between the precursor and the altered rock was confirmed in the scatter graph plotted for the Zr-Hf pair, which showed a positive high correlation with each other. Based on the Zr-Hf couple, the major oxide, trace and rare earth elements scatterplots were plotted in the Log-Log isocone graph for fresh rock versus altered rock. According to the Log-Log isocone graph obtained, it was determined that there was no remarkable mass change in the rocks in the area by TiO2, Fe2O3, W, Cu, Al2O3, Ni, V, Zr elements. On the other hand, mass loss was detected by Na2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Th, Ta, Rb, REE elements. Mass gain was determined by Hg, Cd, Tl, Bi, Mo, Cs, Ag, As, Au, Cu, Pb, Zn and Sb elements. Depending on the interaction of sulfide minerals with groundwater/leachate, acid mine drainage seepage in fractures and cracks in the field has been determined to have an acid mine drainage effect both in the context of water chemistry and in stream sand and soils in which it interacts. Therefore, as a result of this study, it was concluded that the site also has the risk of acid mine drainage due to alteration and weathering.
