Effects of Postharvest Exogenous Melatonin Application on Antioxidative Enzymes in Strawberry Fruit (Fragaria x ananassa)

Abstract

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a characteristically non-climacteric fruit cultivated worldwide, but the short storage life of the harvested fruit remains a challenge. In this study, the fruits of Albion strawberry variety treated with 200 µM melatonin were stored in perforated plastic chalets and low density polyethylene (LDPE-23 µm thick) packaging film in dark cold storage at 0 °C and 90-95% relative humidity for 15 days. Catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activity, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity and melatonin content were analysed every 3 days during storage. As a result of the analyses, it was concluded that storage of strawberries in LDPE film following 200 µM melatonin application may be a more effective method in preserving quality and inhibiting darkening, and therefore can be stored successfully for 15 days. In addition, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were found both between treatments and between storage materials.
